Advertising and Television

Image
Ads are seen in TV shows all the time. From Friends to New Girl to Brooklyn 99, there are ads of some sort that are very present in the show. Friends for example, has many episodes where the group is drinking Coca Cola. New Girl has had many well-placed ads for the Ford Fusion, Range Rover, and many other cars in the show. Each character seems to switch their car from episode to episode, and guess who gets to see the up close shots of the car's cool features? Us, of course. Now I don't know about you, but I really want to buy a Range Rover now that I saw my favorite character drive it. Reality shows where a person gets a new house or redecorates a house (like Mr. Starace) are the worst with this type of advertising. Each of these shows could spend 5 minutes talking about how good this and this product is, or ho this product is the one they will use since it work the best. As we have recently learned, the advertisers need to catch up and stand out to all us consumers, and t

The Apple Lovemark

Image
When I was in seventh grade, my best friend got an iPhone 5. She spent all day playing on her phone and texting her friends while I was just kind of there, waiting till she was done so that I could play on it. The same thing happened with my mom, she got an iPhone when I was young, and all I wanted was to play with it. This is one of the many ways Apple has established a lovemark in society. Almost all of us have seen people using iPhones since we were young, and I am sure many of us wanted our own and couldn't wait till we got one. Apple has established a place in our hearts by being the dream we have had since we were young. We all want a smart phone, but to have an iPhone is better than any regular smart phone. It is different, cooler, better. But we have no real reason to believe this. In fact, many other companies have made phones that are better than the current iPhone, better battery, more apps, etc. Yet, many of us remain loyal to the Apple brand. The company has been

CNN vs. Fox News

CNN "House sends guns background check bill to the Senate with bipartisan support" Fox News "Dem gun bill threatens to turn gun owners into criminals" As I compared these two articles, I was shocked by the numerous differences I found. It was clear from just one article from each news station that they were different. CNN had a very neutral article that had representatives from both sides of the debate discuss their opinion throughout the text. Fox News however seemed to want me to be scared of this recent gun control bill. The proposed bill would require that nobody who has had a criminal record may be sold a firearm. Fox News phrased the bill as an evil thing, one that would get everybody arrested, and take away everyone's rights to guns. It is clear from the use of exaggerated possibilities of how the bill could be detrimental that Fox News clearly favors the republican side of this issue. Fox News makes the point that this bill would not have prevent

Feminism Used For Advertising

Image
Many ads and movie trailers have been using the powerful feminist movement as a way to attract more people. Ads like the one presented above help attract people who want to support women or feel empowered. Yet this begs the question, is it okay for the media to use such movements as a way to make money? I don't believe it is, however I also have felt the positive impact that the feminist ads can have on people. Some of these ads actually make me feel like I can do anything, but I still believe it is the wrong way to empower and represent people. The recent Captain Marvel and Aquaman trailers have focused their attention on the strong females in the movies. This of course is not a 'bad' thing, it does help people feel strong and recognized in the media. However, many people believe it is with the wrong motives that these ads and trailers are used. An article on Vox, 'Why "feminist" advertising doesn't make us better feminists', discusses this questio

My Relationship with Media

Image
Media has played a huge role in my life since I was a little kid. It is all around the world, from the roadside to our homes, media is there. Since media is so present in our life, it is often easy to forget that media affects all of us. As a child watching Nickelodeon and Disney Channel I would be exposed to countless commercials and shows that were selling one product or another. Today I am just as exposed and just as influenced by the media. Instagram and TV that are present everywhere are the biggest influence I have. Watching TV I see ideas that influence my perception of the world. Scrolling through Instagram there are an insane number of ads and people trying to sell their product. Of course, when I see these I am tempted to buy things that I definitely do not need, which is one of the downsides to media. Media often uses people who are in perfect shape and absolutely flawless. This, of course, makes any consumer think that they also need to have this perfect appearance,
